VIDEO KappeNow: Connecting greenery in Haaksbergen, how volunteers are growing an educational sensory garden together In this episode of KappeNow, volunteers Harrie Maathuis, Martin Wolters, and Bote van der Meer discuss the origins and development of the sensory garden in Haaksbergen. The initiative began around 2019, when seven local green associations joined forces within the so-called “Natuurtafel” (Nature Table). By working together with one another and with the municipality, new ideas for nature management and joint projects emerged, including the creation of an educational sensory garden on a plot of land made available on Sonderenstraat. The garden covers approximately 4,000 square meters and is maintained by a group of ten to twelve volunteers who meet weekly. Trees, flowers, fruit, and organic vegetables grow in the garden. A specially designed vegetable garden, divided into ten sections, provides vegetables that volunteers use themselves or make available for free to passers-by. Additionally, the flower garden serves as a colorful attraction in the summer. Education is an important goal of the project. Volunteers want to involve schools so that children learn where food comes from and discover more about plants and nature. With initiatives such as tree planting days and plans for a water pool, the sensory garden continues to develop as a meeting place for nature and the community.
