In the 1980s, when family visits across the strait were permitted, Taiwanese veteran Liu Dengda returned to his hometown in Yueyang. He asked his nephew where his mother was. The nephew replied that his mother had been killed by Japanese soldiers shortly after he enlisted. From then on, failing to protect his mother became a lifelong pain for him. In 2025, after returning to mourn his mother, Liu Denda passed away before he could return to Taiwan. He was finally laid to rest beside his mother's grave. This mother and son, separated for so many years, had finally crossed the strait to be together in life and death. Of the 500,000 veterans who went to Taiwan, most passed away in exile before cross-strait relations opened. A few counted down their days in veterans' dormitories, some returning home only when their hair had turned white, while others never made it back at all.
