A few years ago, we passed through, parked at the visitor center, and walked down to the Lower Overlook. That was it. We figured we’d pretty much seen what there was to see. Boy, were we wrong. We barely scratched the surface of the outdoor adventures and adrenaline to be found at New River Gorge. It’s probably best known for Bridge Day, when thrill-seekers literally leap—or get catapulted—off the bridge in a freefall dive. Most sane people stick to whitewater rafting. The rest are out mountain biking or hiking across miles of rugged trails. As we said, never a dull moment! You’ve got a ton of options here. For this trip, we leaned into the more tourist-friendly experiences—and honestly, we were surprised how much we enjoyed them. First, we did the Bridge Walk, a guided tour beneath the New River Gorge Arch Bridge. Totally worth the price of admission… assuming you’re not afraid of heights. 😅 Then we headed underground for a guided coal mine tour, where we learned about the lives of coal miners from over 100 years ago while standing in the actual mine.
