Boston Police Gang Unit Seizes Firearm after Struggle During Traffic Stop in Mattapan

At approximately 8:55 PM on Friday, February 23, 2024, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force apprehended Tyrell Murphy, aged 32, from Hyde Park, on charges related to firearms and drugs. While conducting patrol duties near Morton St and Harvard St, officers observed a vehicle with heavily tinted windows speeding through the intersection. Upon attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle swiftly made a u-turn and proceeded along Morton St. The officers managed to halt the vehicle successfully and approached the driver and two passengers, including Murphy, who was seated in the rear. Requesting the suspect to lower his window due to the heavy tint, the officers noticed his visible nervousness and a noticeable bulge in his hoodie pocket. Subsequent investigation led to an order for all passengers to exit the vehicle. However, Murphy resisted, reaching towards his waist area and bending forward. Despite his resistance, the officers gained control, discovering a loaded Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 firearm with an insight laser on Murphy’s person. The firearm, found with one .380 round in the chamber and a black Promag Extended Magazine containing nine .380 rounds, was later confirmed as stolen. Furthermore, a search of Murphy’s belongings, including a bookbag in the rear passenger area, uncovered a Ziplock-style bag containing 38 pink pills, 1 green pill, and 8 yellow pills suspected to be Ecstasy with a “lego” logo, along with three additional bags of marijuana, all seized as evidence. Murphy was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to distribute Class B and Class D substances, and receiving stolen property under $1200. He was arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
