One of the oldest cities in this part of the world, it is today a settlement rich in history and culture, which combines its historical past with the facilities of a modern city. The city center, located between the Venetian walls of the 16th century, offers visitors interesting museums and art galleries, Byzantine churches and a number of medieval and neoclassical buildings, while the narrow streets preserve the romantic atmosphere of the past. Much of the charm and beauty of Nicosia can be found in the old town, with labyrinthine alleys and old houses with elegant but modern courtyards. Nicosia is the last divided capital of the world, a fact that dates back to an armed conflict of 1974, which divided Cyprus into two.
