Princess Diana's groundbreaking speech at Eating Disorders '93 Conference (1993)

On April 27, 1993, Diana, Princess of Wales delivered a speech on eating disorders to the 'Eating Disorders '93' Conference in Kensington Town Hall, arguing for a better understanding of the disease through education as well as empathy with those suffering. Though Diana did not reference her own struggle with bulimia nervosa (it was not until her 1995 interview with the BBC's Martin Bashir that the princess discussed it publicly), she spoke with the conviction of someone with a personal understanding of the disease. In doing so, the Princess of Wales shone a light on a taboo subject that had for a long time been widely misunderstood. 2 June 2023 is World Eating Disorders Action Day.
