Joseph of Egypt - In Prison Exposition of Genesis 40 Preacher: Rev. Sérgio Wurlitzer Lima The commander of the guard entrusted them to Joseph's care, so that he might serve them; and for some time they were in prison. ⁵ And the two of them dreamed, each his own dream, on the same night; each dream with its own meaning, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were imprisoned. ⁶ When Joseph arrived in the morning, he saw them, and behold, they were troubled. ⁷ Then he asked Pharaoh's officials, who were with him in the prison of his master's house: “Why do you look sad today?” ⁸ They answered: “We both had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” Joseph said to them: “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me the dream you had.” ⁹ Then the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said, “In my dream there was a vine before me. ¹⁰ And on the vine were three branches. As the vine budded, it blossomed, and its clusters produced ripe grapes. ¹¹ Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand. I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and gave it to Pharaoh. ¹² Then Joseph said, “This is the interpretation of the dream: the three branches are three days. ¹³ Within three days, Pharaoh will restore you to your position, and you will put the cup in his hand, according to the old custom when you were his cupbearer. ¹⁴ But remember me when things go well for you. Please show me kindness and speak to Pharaoh about me, and get me out of this prison; 15 For I was indeed stolen from the land of the Hebrews; and here I have done nothing that they should put me in this dungeon. 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. 17 In the topmost basket was every kind of bread that a baker makes for Pharaoh. And the birds ate from the basket that was on my head.” 18 Then Joseph said, “This is the interpretation of the dream: the three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days, Pharaoh will have your head cut off and hanged on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh.” 20 On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he gave a banquet for all his servants. And in the midst of these, he reinstated the chief cupbearer and condemned the chief baker. ²¹ He reinstated the chief cupbearer in his position, in which he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand, ²² but he had the chief baker hanged, as Joseph had interpreted. ²³ But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
