Drawing on jazz, soul, and R&B influences, he records a wide range of melodic and dynamic sounds, characterized by a clean yet fat tone achieved by plugging his guitar directly into the amplifier. Born in Tokyo, he began his musical career in 1986 after retiring as an American football player. As a composer and arranger, he created music for the "JR Yume Kukan '89" (Dream Space '89) exhibit at the 1989 Yokohama Expo. From around 1990, he became active as a guitarist, performing primarily at jazz clubs in Tokyo and Yokohama. He released his first album in 1995. In 2008, he made his major-label debut with Nippon Columbia as part of the band "R134" and won the "Domestic New Star Award" from Adlib magazine. He has produced numerous commercial jingles for companies such as Autobacs and Iris Ohyama, as well as theme music for programs and events including Bi no Kyojin-tachi (Giants of Beauty), the Koshien Bowl, and a production about Sakamoto Ryoma. In addition to working as a radio personality and appearing in television and film, he has published an instructional book on jazz guitar through Yamaha Music Media. Marking the 30th anniversary of his CD debut in 2025, he released his 28th album as a leader, *Regrowth*, followed by his 29th, *Dragon Horse*. In 2026, he formed the "Atsuhiko Sugimoto Big Band," building upon the foundation of the Atsuhiko Sugimoto Band. The ensemble features leading Japanese musicians such as Osamu Koike (tenor sax), Nami Kano (alto sax), Masaaki Ikeda (trombone), Risaburo Matsuki (trumpet), Shingo Tanaka (T-SQUARE), and Keiichi Miyako (SOPHIA). He operates with a unique style in which he personally handles composition, arrangement, conducting, and performance. In recent years, he has garnered attention from guitar fans both in Japan and abroad for his inventive playing style—most notably his original "Gyaku-Teke" technique—and for sharing new variations of it developed during live performances.
