RANGRIK RANG | THE UNKNOWN MOUNTAIN : JIM CURRAN | Expedition Tales @THC
The film tells the story of the first ascent of P6553, an unknown mountain in the Kinnaur region of the Himalayas, which was subsequently named as Rangrik Rang ( 6553M) by an Indo- British expedition team in 1994. The film illustrates that success is never a forgone conclusion, and each member of the team must cope with their own fears. The expedition team , led by Sir Chris Bonnington and Harish Kapadia, was successful in placing eight members on the summit. This was the first team of foreign mountaineers to climb in this restricted region of the Indian Himalayas since 1933. The film was directed by Jim Curran, a celebrated videographer, climber, author, artist and teacher. Curran held the lens through which much of the climbing world was exposed to the great achievements of the British climbing elite during 1970s and early 1980s. He shot 15 documentaries featuring alpine giants, the likes of Chris Bonington, Joe Tasker, Peter Boardman and Alan Rouse. His most famous book, K2 – The Story of The Savage Mountain, won him the 1996 award for best non-fiction at the Banff Mountain Book Festival.
