Part 1 | Why Hayao Miyazaki Rejected The Lord of The Rings
Hayao Miyazaki once described The Lord of the Rings as a glorification of violence. Considering that both Miyazaki and J.R.R. Tolkien are regarded as two of the greatest fantasy storytellers of all time, that criticism seems almost impossible to understand. In this video, I explore the philosophical divide between Studio Ghibli and Middle-earth, from Miyazaki's lifelong pacifism to Tolkien's understanding of evil, mythology, and war. I want to be clear, this isn't a debate about which creator is "better." It's an exploration of why two masters of fantasy could look at the same world and arrive at completely different conclusions.
