On June 27, 2026, an asteroid that may be wider than the Golden Gate Bridge is long will sweep past Earth at just 2.6 million kilometers, its closest approach in over 400 years and the closest since before the year 1600. We have tracked (152637) 1997 NC1 for nearly three decades and flagged it as potentially hazardous, yet we still cannot agree on the two most basic facts about it: how big it is, or what it is made of. Size estimates run from 400 meters to 1.6 kilometers, and three different teams have read its light and come back with three incompatible answers. One impossible measurement, a surface that may reflect 58% of the light hitting it, has even led a few to ask whether it is a rock at all. It will miss us. But on June 27, NASA's Goldstone radar will finally force an answer. So how does an object this large, this close, and this long known stay this completely unidentified, right up until now? š Subscribe to The Sky Lab for space weather, solar activity, and the stories behind the storms. š¬ Drop a comment ā where are you watching from, and will you be trying to spot 1997 NC1 through a telescope on the 27th? š¢ Share this video to help us grow this community. ā ā ļø DISCLAIMER: This video is for educational and informational purposes.
