The Mining Town That Turned Into the Moon: Queenstown, Tasmania
By 1900, Queenstown was one of the richest mining towns in the British Empire. The Mount Lyell copper mine made fortunes — and destroyed everything around it. Eleven smelters burned day and night, feeding on millions of tonnes of rainforest timber, while sulphur fumes killed every tree the axes missed. Then the rain came and stripped the naked hills down to bare rock. What remained was a landscape found nowhere else on Earth: pink and orange mountains rising out of Tasmania's rainforest — a man-made moonscape. The river ran orange with mine waste. In 1912, a fire deep inside the North Lyell mine killed 42 men in Australia's worst hard-rock mining disaster. The mine survived another century before shutting down in 2014 — and the town has been fading ever since. This is the story of Queenstown, Tasmania — the mining town that turned into the Moon. 🔔 Subscribe for more stories of lost towns and forgotten cities. #Queenstown #Tasmania #Australia #MiningHistory #Moonscape
