The widespread consensus so far: a five-door SUV or a VW bus is the accepted minimum size. Anyone touring in a Suzuki Jimny or a short 90s Defender is generally met with an appreciative nod, usually meant to express: Respect, but not with me. The key question is: Do you want to sleep in or on the vehicle? The former offers many advantages – and is the most inconspicuous solution – but requires a minimum length of two meters behind the driver's seat to accommodate a bed. Impossible for small SUVs, but things are different in the minivan world. Whether it's the Opel Zafira, Renault Kangoo, Nissan Note, or Ford's B-Max – every manufacturer has a pumped-up compact class in its range that can potentially be converted into a camper. Volker Rohde chose the VW Caddy because it offers a particularly wide interior – and is available with all-wheel drive. As a rustically skirted "Alltrack" version with a Seikel suspension suitable for rough roads, the Golf derivative is visibly longer-legged than the usual family car.
