An Architect's 1950s Garden Home Inspired by Tadao Ando | Singapore
In this week's episode, we visit the home of Chih Wen, founder of Hyphen Architects, who chose to remodel his own 1957 home in Singapore rather than rebuild it. Preserving its original timber rafters, mosaic tiles and ventilation blocks, the home reflects a belief that architecture should respond to nature instead of shutting it out, allowing the rhythms of sun, rain and wind to become part of everyday life. Drawing inspiration from Japanese precedents such as Tadao Ando's Azuma House and Ryue Nishizawa's Moriyama House, the renovation embraces an architecture that remains open to changing weather and the surrounding landscape. More than creating comfort through separation, the home quietly asks what it means to "learn how to love our tropical climate again."
