She was raised by John and Rosa Doherty, who instilled in her the Southern Baptist faith from her mother's side, with Irish and Native American roots. Therefore, her parents supported her emerging talent, and by age 11, she was already making a name for herself in the acting world. In 1982, she landed guest roles on popular TV series such as Voyagers and Father Murphy. These early roles gave her a taste of the entertainment industry and opened doors to bigger opportunities.
