Should we act out of love or out of fear of Allah?" How can we love Allah and His Messenger ﷺ (peace be upon him) more than ourselves? As stated in the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, "A Muslim is not a true Muslim until he loves Allah and His Messenger more than himself." Therefore, one of the criteria for becoming a full and worthy Muslim is that you love Allah and His Messenger more than yourself." As for whether we should act out of love for Allah or out of fear of Him? The answer is both. Understand that fear of Allah is not comparable to ordinary fear. Love for Allah is a completely different kind of love. Love before Allah is the highest level of love! Fear of Allah stems from the fear of displeasing Allah, the fear of displeasing our beloved Prophet ﷺ—that's a completely different kind of fear and a completely different kind of love. So how can you love Allah more than yourself? When you realize that your action could lead to loss, but you still decide to do it for the sake of Allah, that's precisely the sign that you love Allah more than yourself. You know perfectly well that if you were offered a wonderful job at a bank, with a high salary, maybe even three times your current salary, and you know that our beloved Prophet ﷺ said that riba, or interest in traditional banks, is haram, and you refuse the job... Why? Because you're doing it for the sake of Allah. You demonstrated that you love Allah more than yourself—you turned down a job with a salary three times higher, you turned down worldly luxuries. Here's an example of how you can love Allah more than yourself. Another example: the Prophet said: "If a plague breaks out in the region in which you live, do not leave it." Therefore, you are obligated to submit to Allah and His Messenger. You cannot simply run away. You must show faith and patience. Whatever happens to you—if you are destined to die, you will die a martyr. In this case, you are following the commandments of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. And when you do this not because medical scholars have established it, but because you seek the pleasure of Allah, this is an indication that you love Allah more than yourself. And every time you put Allah and His Messenger above all else, this also shows that you love Allah more than yourself. And if you love Allah more than yourself, then this means you are a true believer, a true Muslim, and, in sha Allah, you will enter Jannat al-Firdaws.
