A massive, approximately 70-meter-tall boulder sits above the Kitanomaki Tunnel on the Joshinetsu Expressway. The Kitanomaki site construction project, which began in 2017 as a preventive maintenance project to prepare for a potential disaster, began to remove this boulder, a world first. Full-scale excavation work will begin in 2023. For safety reasons, numerous scaffolding structures have been erected around the boulder, creating an impressive sight that has earned it the nickname "Scaffolding Fortress." This time, we'll be following the Kitano Maki site tour held on June 16th, introducing the multiple safety measures in place, a demonstration of rock excavation methods, and the dedicated work lines constructed around the rock masses.
