The New Corn Disease Worrying Maryland Farmers | MD F&H

The Rose Family have been stewarding the land in White Hall at Clear Meadow Farm since 1943. With experience in dairy milking, beef, soybeans, and even sunflower fields, the three generations of Roses have seen almost everything that working with nature can throw at them. But even they haven’t seen tar spot.Tar Spot is a disease that has been prevalent in South America for over a century but has now begun appearing in American farm fields in the last decade. The disease caused by the fungus Phyllachora maydis, has damaged corn so significantly in other parts of the country that yields were reduced by up to 60 bushels an acre and it was ranked as the number 1 disease that prohibited corn growth in the nation over the last three years. Fortunately, Andrew Kness, Senior Agent of the University of Maryland Extension Service, is working diligently to prevent the spread and find effective treatment strategies.
