A Chess Records Photographer Kept Notes for Forty Years. One Moment Was Never Published.

He photographed hundreds of artists for Chess Records in the early 1960s. He kept notes on most of them — professional observations, session records, the working archive of a man who understood that what happened between photographs was often more interesting than what happened in them. For forty years, he never shared what he wrote about the day he photographed Etta James. Not because it was a secret. Because he wasn't sure anyone would understand what he was trying to describe. In this video, we look at what a Chess Records photographer saw between the photographs — the moment that happened when the camera wasn't rolling, the thing that no lens could have caught, and what it revealed about who Etta James actually was when the session stopped asking her to be something.
