The First Voyage of Polonia from to Eretz Yisrael 1 May 1934

לפניכם מה שהוא לדעתי אחד הסרטונים התיעודיים המרתקים ואישית גם המרגשים שראיתי אי פעם. זהו קליפ משנת 1934 על עליית יהודי פולין לארץ ישראל באוניה "פולוניה". הסרט מתעד את נסיעת הבכורה הרשמית של האוניה שהפליגה באופן קבוע מהים השחור, מנמל קונסטנצה שברומניה בים השחור אל ארץ ישראל. הסרט מתעד את מסיבת העיתונאים שנערכת על הסיפון, את הסעודה החגיגית של כל מיני נכבדים לפני ההפלגה את סיור העיתונאים על הסיפון ואת ההפלגה לארץ ישראל בספטמבר 1934. הקריין מתאר בעברית רהוטה ונמלצת, ובמבטא יידישסטי שעבר מן העולם, את כל שלבי הפלגה ואת מה שקורה על סיפון האוניה. אנו מבחינים בשלוש קבוצות עיקריות של עולים לארץ ישראל שללא ספק הייתה גם חפיפה ביניהן: 1. יהודים ממעמד הביניים מהערים הגדולות, בחליפות מעונבות ושמלות ערב, שמנצלים את ההפלגה לארוחות משובחות וריקודים סלוניים עדכניים לצלילי תזמורת האוניה. 2. יהודים מסורתיים, חרדים שמשתתפים בתפילות יום כיפור לצלילי החזן הנפלא והמקהלה הנהדרת שגם הם חלק מצוות האוניה. 3. חלוצים צעירים, כולל ילדים קטנים, שרוקדים הורה ללא הרף על הסיפון, בציפייה להגשמת החלום לעלייה לארץ ישראל. כשעשן שחור משחור מיתמר מלמעלה עוקבת המצלמה אחר מסע האוניה: היציאה מהנמל, המעבר בין מיצרי הבוספורוס הוא מבט על איסטנבול ועד להגעה לחופי ארץ ישראל כשהיא חולפת, כנראה לצורכי יחסי ציבור, ליד חופי תל-אביב והנמל ההולך ונבנה. האוניה פולוניה הייתה שייכת לממשלת פולין והנסיעה כללה נסיעה ברכבת מהעיר לבוב שבגליציה לקונסטנצה שברומניה. העולים היו צריכים להגיע בכוחות עצמם ללבוב שנקראה עדיין למברג בפי היהודים. אלה שנסעו במחלקה השלישית הנמוכה, היו חייבים לארוז את המטען שלהם בסל נצרים עם מנעול, ולהשתכן במלון מיוחד למהגרים מפולין בעיר למברג, משם יצאו לאחר בדיקה רפואית במחלקה השלישית של הרכבת עם תעודות מיוחדות לרומניה. הסרט הזה מרגש אותי במיוחד מכיוון שבאוניה פולוניה עלתה כעבור מספר חודשים משפחתו של אבא שלי לארץ ישראל: סבא יום-טוב ליפא, סבתא אסתר, אבא שלי משה זאב, אחיו קופל, לימים יעקב, והבן הצעיר בעריש, לימים דב. Here is what I think is one of the most fascinating and personally exciting documentaries I have ever seen. This is a clip from 1934 about the immigration of Polish Jews to Israel on the ship "Polonia". The film documents the official debut voyage of the ship that sailed regularly from the Romanian port of Constanza in the Black Sea to the Land of Israel. The film documents the press conference held on board, the gala dinner of all kinds of dignitaries before the voyage, the press tour on board and the voyage to Eretz Israel in September 1934. The narrator describes in fluent and recommended Hebrew, and in a Yiddish accent that has passed from the world, all the stages of the voyage and what is happening on board the ship. We notice three main groups of immigrants to Eretz Israel that undoubtedly also overlapped: 1. Middle-class Jews from the big cities, in tie suits and evening dresses, who take advantage of the voyage for fine dining and up-to-date ballroom dancing to the sounds of the ship's orchestra. 2. Traditional, ultra-Orthodox Jews who participate in Yom Kippur prayers to the sounds of the wonderful cantor and the wonderful choir who are also part of the ship's crew. 3. Young pioneers, including small children, who are constantly dancing a parent on board, in anticipation of the fulfillment of the dream of immigrating to Eretz Israel. As black smoke billows from above, the camera follows the ship's journey: leaving the port, crossing the Bosphorus Straits is a view of Istanbul until it reaches the shores of Israel as it passes, apparently for public relations, near the shores of Tel Aviv and the port being built. The ship Polonia belonged to the Polish government and the trip included a train journey from the city of Lvov in Galicia to Constanza in Romania. The immigrants had to reach Lvov on their own, which was still called Lemberg by the Jews. Those traveling in the lower third class had to pack their luggage in a wicker basket with a lock, and stay in a special hotel for Polish immigrants in the city of Lemberg, from where they left after a medical examination in the third class of the train with special certificates for Romania. This film excites me especially because on the ship Polonia, a few months later, my father's family immigrated to Eretz Israel: Grandpa Yom-Tov Lipa, Grandma Esther, my father Moshe Zeev, his brother Kopel, later Yaakov, and the youngest son Berish, later Dov.
