Paid Better Than Doctors in 1955. The College Lobby Buried Gunsmithing by 1985.

Paid better than doctors in nineteen fifty five. The college lobby of the late nineteen seventies and the nineteen eighties decided that the gunsmithing trade should be quietly removed from polite professional conversation. In this vault we open the archive on the working gunsmith trade: The seventeen twenty eight origins of American gunsmithing in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where German immigrant craftsmen built the first Pennsylvania long rifles. What a master gunsmith earned in nineteen fifty five, when his income exceeded that of the average country doctor or attorney in his county. The federal vocational funding shifts of nineteen seventy six and nineteen eighty four that quietly defunded the trade. The post pandemic surge in demand, the industry estimate of fifteen to twenty thousand working professionals today, and the specialty income ranges. The four major American gunsmithing schools that still operate, the apprenticeship path, and the Federal Firearms License requirements. This video focuses on the history, economics, and professional training path of the working gunsmith trade. It does not discuss manufacturing, modification of regulated parts, or any subject requiring specific federal licensing beyond a standard Federal Firearms License. If this vault opened something for you, leave a comment with the trade you wish your school had taught you instead of college prep. The next vault opens soon.
