When parents don't force their professional lineage to continue, new stars are born!

In the latest episode of Behind the Choices, I had the privilege of speaking with a doctor — not about medicine, but about parenting. What happens when your son chooses management over medicine, despite growing up in a family where healthcare is a way of life? Do you persuade? Do you worry? Or do you learn to trust? What stayed with me wasn't just their son's decision. It was his mother's honesty. She spoke about the difficult journey of accepting that children don't always have to walk the path we imagined for them. Sometimes, they see something in themselves long before we do. What I admired even more was that while academics remained important, she never allowed marks to become her son's entire identity. Singing, acting, exploring new interests—these weren't distractions. They were nurtured with the same care as his education. And perhaps that's what gave him the confidence to eventually make a choice that truly belonged to him. As career counsellors, educators, and parents, we spend so much time asking, "Which career is the right one?" Maybe the better question is, "Are we creating an environment where our children feel safe enough to discover it themselves?" This conversation is not just for parents from medical families. It's for every parent who has ever wondered whether holding on too tightly might prevent a child from becoming who they were meant to be.
