It Averaged One Railroad Worker Dead Every Hour — The Link and Pin Coupler

When a man applied for work in a railroad switching yard in the 1880s, the yardmaster didn’t ask for references. He asked him to hold up his hands. Missing fingers were the resume. The link-and-pin coupler forced brakemen to stand between two moving freight cars and drop a pin while the cars closed in. It killed one railroad worker every 3.5 hours. The safer automatic coupler existed since 1873. It wasn’t required until 1893. #RailroadHistory #LaborHistory #IndustrialAmerica #ForgottenMachines
