Exploring Franklin, WA: Washington’s Forgotten Coal Mining Ghost Town Hidden the forests above the Green River in Western Washington state lies the abandoned ghost town of Franklin, Washington, a once-thriving coal mining community that has now faded into history. Established in the late 1800s, Franklin boomed as miners flocked to extract coal from its rich underground seams. However, tragedy, labor disputes, and the decline of the coal industry led to its eventual abandonment. Franklin was the site of Washington State second worst coal mine disaster which occurred in 1894 when a suspicious fire claimed the lives of 37 miners some of which are interred in the abandoned Franklin cemetery. Today, all that remains are eerie ruins, long abandoned mine shafts, and a lonely cemetery, whispering stories of the past.
