What is the Fifth Playing Card Suit?
Clubs. Diamonds. Hearts. Spades. The four little black and red pips you see at the top of a standard French deck of playing cards. Bicycle, tricycle, motorcycle, playboy, whatever set you’re playing with, you’re likely familiar with the four symbols found on one of the most universal game pieces ever created. Alongside the likes of the various figures of chess, the alternating dark and light squares of a checkers board, and the crosses and rings of tic tac toe, these Four Suits are ingrained in the history of game design. I want to raise a novel question. There are four suits. What if there were more? Today, I want to take a look at how other card games and manufacturers in the past have handled creating alternative or extra suits. I’ll compare the prevalence and impact of certain symbols in the gaming zeitgeist, and then, I want to analyze more the design philosophy of the first four suits. How they can be applied in the evaluation, and possible creation of additional suits and symbols.
