I flushed the heat exchanger of an old (9-year-old) wall-mounted gas boiler with a 1:10 solution of phosphoric acid and water. Ideally, it would be better to circulate the water with a small pump. The boiler was very noisy, rattling and gurgling when the hot water was turned on, and the pressure would rise sharply, often shutting down with an error if it exceeded 2 bars.
