The Difference between Continuous Tempo and Cruise Intervals: Explained
A lot of runners hear terms like continuous tempo, cruise intervals, broken tempo, threshold repeats, Norwegian method, and Daniels T-Pace, but very few training plans actually explain what the difference is or when each approach makes the most sense. In this video, I break down continuous tempo versus cruise intervals, what each one is actually targeting, and how to decide which structure is more appropriate for your training, fitness level, and race goals. We get into the physiological differences between the two, including how continuous tempo creates a longer sustained threshold demand, while cruise intervals allow you to accumulate more controlled time near threshold without the same level of muscular breakdown or pacing errors. I also explain why both methods work, why neither one is automatically superior in every situation, and why the best choice usually depends on the athlete rather than internet dogma. I also cover the biggest mistakes runners make with both workouts, including running continuous tempos too hard, taking too much recovery between cruise intervals, confusing threshold work with VO2 max work, and failing to adjust for fatigue, heat, hills, or training context. At the end, I walk through practical workout examples and show how I actually progress athletes through both continuous and broken tempo sessions in real training. If you’ve ever wondered whether your tempo sessions are actually helping you improve or just leaving you tired, this breakdown will help you understand the difference and use both workouts more effectively.
