Opened in 2018 inside a former elementary school, this expansive museum blends natural history, cultural arts, and conservation into a single immersive experience. Visitors move room by room through thousands of artifacts collected from around the world, including tribal artworks, historic tools, rare books, and taxidermy animals representing diverse ecosystems. One of the most striking displays is a towering woolly mammoth skeleton discovered in Alaska, alongside prehistoric fossils and large mineral specimens. In case you are wondering what some of the items are, the museum provides Interactive iPads that guide guests through over 250 short videos, offering deeper stories and context behind many of the exhibits. The museum was created by Canadian outdoorsman and naturalist Jim Shockey, who spent decades travelling globally with his wife Louise and building the collection that now fills more than 15,000 square feet of exhibit space. Today, the Hand of Man Museum attracts visitors looking for a unique and educational stop in the Cowichan region — a place where global history, wildlife, and human creativity are all brought together under one roof. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of Cowichan Bay, the centre is more than a museum—it’s a living tribute to the enduring bond between people, culture, and the ocean.
