Reasons for Hope - Politics and the Dynamic of Affects

Reasons for Hope - Presidential Lecture Series of Central European University (CEU), May 15, 2019. A lecture by Chantal Mouffe, Emeritus Professor of Political Theory, Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster, London. Welcome Remarks Michael Ignatieff / President and Rector, CEU The lecture examined the crucial role played in politics by what I call 'passions' to refer to the common affects that are at stake in the construction of collective identities. Taking Chantal Mouffe's bearings from the agonistic model of democracy that she has elaborated in several of her writings Mouffe scrutinize the nature of current 'post-democratic' condition and enquire about the affects that need to be mobilized in order to create a collective will able to give a new vigour to the democratic ideals.
