5 Revit Functions Most Beginners Don't Know About (but need to)

Here are 5 functions for Revit beginners that make an impact but aren’t usually known. In a recent group project for studio 8, one of my mates is using Revit for the first time. This is fine, but it’s quite funny whenever he shows me something. I sit there trying not to cringe while he does it the least efficient way possible. He might spend 5 minutes trying something when it can be done in the click of a button. It made me realise there’s a lot of features in Revit that are seemingly simple but make huge differences, that you just won’t know about unless shown. Its called the Visibility Graphics Override. Hierarchy is so important for any architectural drawing. To be able to adjust line styles, thicknesses, tones of lines and hatches is key to getting a clear, readable drawing. This feature will allow you to do just that. 4:01 View Templates The second feature enables you to adjust these settings to all your types of drawings at once. A time saver, if you will. This feature is called view templates, and they are a game changer. My other mate who is well versed in Revit wasn’t using these, and when I showed this feature to him, he was ecstatic. 7:28 Phasing Next, its phasing. If you’ve never heard of phasing before, you’d probably have no idea what it is. Quite simply, it’s a way to phase your project into different stages. If you’re creating a new build on an empty lot, all in one stage, you won’t need phasing. Generally, for additions and alterations, there’s an “existing” stage (that which lived on the site before any work has commened), a new construction phase (sometimes split into different stages for different area of works at different times) and a demolition phase (in between existing and new construction, that which is being removed from the site). Phasing allows your to work between these stages inside your Revit model. 11:36 Groups The fourth Revit feature that most beginners don’t know is using groups. Groups allow you to model something once and duplicate it throughout the rest of your model. Any changes you make to the group appear across all other instances of that group. It’s a pretty standard way to work on multi-storey projects, or simply array objects that need to stay the same and may change in the future. 13:43 Enscape Plugin The fifth and final feature for Revit is actually a plugin. It allows you to render your project in real time, used by myself as more of a design tool than a renderer, but does both fantastically.
