Heaven itself seems jealous— Unwilling to believe that even orioles and swallows must one day return to dust. Through a thousand autumns and ten thousand ages, This place remains, waiting for poets yet to come, Who will sing wildly and drink deeply, And come to visit this mound of the wild geese. 【Brief Explanation】 In the fifth year of the Taihe era under Emperor Zhangzong of the Jin dynasty (1205 AD), Yuan Haowen was only sixteen years old. While traveling to Bingzhou (present-day Taiyuan, Shanxi) to take the imperial examination, he encountered a man who had captured a wild goose. The hunter said: “Today I caught one goose and killed it. Another escaped, but it stayed nearby, crying and refusing to leave. While calling out in grief, it suddenly plunged to the ground and died.” Deeply moved by the goose’s devotion to its mate, Yuan Haowen bought the goose and buried it beside the Fen River, piling stones to mark the place and naming it “The Mound of the Wild Geese” (雁丘). Those traveling with him also wrote poems, and Yuan Haowen later refined the work according to the “Moyu’er” (摸魚兒) ci poetic form.
