After killing Gambino in self-defense, Guts runs away and eventually encounters Griffith, the leader of the Band of the Hawk. Guts is defeated by Griffith in a duel and joins the group. Guts and the Band of the Hawk become famous for their victories and are given noble titles by the king. However, Guts eventually leaves the group after learning that Griffith can only be friends with people who have their own ambitions.
