La Razza Livorno | Caratteristiche di questa razza avicola | Puntata 2

The Leghorn breed originated in Italy, although the development of current breeds occurred in various countries around the world. Leghorn hens descend from a country chicken from the Tuscan city of the same name, which gives them their name. Thanks to their strong egg-laying ability, they have been exported throughout the world over the years, resulting in the development of various species throughout the world. We've said that there are various types of this egg-laying breed; some are very similar in their initial characteristics, while others are very different, although they retain their basic features. Italian-type Leghorns have a large tail, carried wide open and high above the backline. The German-Dutch type has a broad, heavily feathered tail that is carried below the backline. American-type chickens carry their tails like Dutch-type Leghorns, but hold them more extended than other breeds. Chickens of the English line have short, curled tails, and their legs are much longer than those of other bloodlines. The Livornese breed, of Italian origin, has a well-developed, single, deep red comb. The male holds it completely straight, while the female has it completely curled. All Livornese varieties have in common their white earlobes, yellow shanks, and reddish-bay eyes. Feather color varies greatly, and in each country, there are variations recognized only where they developed. Our breeding line includes white, silver, silver-orange, blue, golden, fawn, black, black with white spots, barred, partridge, pile, red, etc. The Livornese has been very popular since the early 1960s for its extraordinary egg-laying ability. Females lay up to 200 eggs a year, so many breeders have adopted them as utility chickens. Over the years that followed, many breeders converted them into ornamental chickens and began using them at exhibitions. Their egg-laying ability remains intact even in winter. Their eggs are completely white, and by nature, they are not broody. If you intend to breed them, be aware that it will be very difficult to obtain a good brood hen. These birds grow very quickly and mature rapidly. They have an extremely lively temperament and can be raised in open spaces or in a small coop without any problems. They can be tamed very easily, although they do not like to be picked up; in fact, many specimens are wary and shy.
