The Ultimate Monsal Trail Derbyshire Bike Ride | Bakewell Station to Miller's Dale Drone 4K
Welcome to one of the most scenic and accessible cycling routes in the UK! In this video, we are taking you on a gorgeous two-wheeled journey along the famous Monsal Trail in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Our ride kicks off at the historic, beautifully preserved Bakewell Station and takes us through breathtaking limestone dales, over towering viaducts, and through spectacular, atmospheric railway tunnels before we wrap up our journey for a well-earned treat at the Miller's Dale Refreshment Rooms. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist, a family looking for a fun day out, or someone who just loves incredible British countryside views, this traffic-free trail has something special for everyone. The Route Overview Starting your journey at Bakewell Station sets a wonderful tone for the day. The station itself still retains its old-school charm, giving you an immediate sense of the history you are about to ride through. From here, the trail stretches out on a flat, well-resurfaced path that gently cuts through the Derbyshire landscape. Because it is a former railway line, the gradient is incredibly gentle, meaning you don't have to worry about grueling uphill climbs. As you leave Bakewell behind, you will find yourself surrounded by lush green fields, steep-sided limestone valleys, and the gentle sounds of the local wildlife. The absolute highlights of this specific stretch are the spectacular tunnels. Once dark and closed off to the public, tunnels like Headstone Tunnel are now fully restored, paved, and automatically lit during the day. Riding through them feels like stepping into a time machine, and the blast of cool air inside is incredibly refreshing on a warm summer day. As you exit Headstone Tunnel, you are immediately greeted by the jaw-dropping sight of the Monsal Viaduct, spanning high above the River Wye. It is the perfect place to safely pull over, take some photos, and soak in the views. Continuing onwards past spectacular rock faces and old lime kilns, the trail brings you directly to Miller's Dale Station. Once a bustling railway junction, it is now a peaceful haven for walkers and cyclists, and home to the fantastic Miller's Dale Refreshment Rooms—the ultimate destination to reward yourself with hot drinks, cold sodas, and a brilliant selection of cakes and sandwiches. Essential Travel Tips for Your Trip Getting There & Parking: Bakewell Station has its own paid parking lot, but it can fill up incredibly fast on weekends and sunny holidays. If it is full, there are several large parking options down in Bakewell town center, though this will mean a short, uphill cycle or walk up to the station to start the trail. Bike Rentals: Don't worry if you don't own a bike or can't transport yours! There are excellent bike hire facilities located right along the trail, including at Blackwell Mill near the end of the trail and Hassop Station (which you will pass between Bakewell and Miller's Dale). They offer standard mountain bikes, hybrids, electric bikes, and kids' trailers. Booking in advance during peak seasons is highly recommended. Tunnel Etiquette & Safety: The tunnels are one of the coolest parts of the ride, literally and figuratively! They are well-lit between dawn and dusk, but it takes a moment for your eyes to adjust when entering. Keep your speed down, stay to the left, and be mindful of pedestrians who also use the trail. Having a bell on your bike is highly recommended to gently let walkers know you are approaching. Weather and Clothing: Because the Peak District weather can change quickly, it is always smart to pack a light windbreaker or rain jacket. The tunnels can also feel quite chilly and damp even in the middle of summer, so having an extra layer makes a big difference. Beating the Crowds: The Monsal Trail is incredibly popular. If you want a peaceful ride where you can really cruise without dodging too many people, try to start early in the morning (before 9:30 AM) or later in the afternoon. Weekdays are also significantly quieter than weekends. Extend Your Day: Once you finish your refreshments at Miller's Dale, you can either turn back for a leisurely ride back to Bakewell, or continue further along the trail towards Wyedale if you want to add a few more miles to your adventure. Alternatively, leaving time to explore the beautiful town of Bakewell afterwards for an authentic Bakewell Pudding is the perfect way to end the day. Enjoy the ride, stay safe, and don't forget to subscribe for more adventures across the worl!
