It is the Outer London Borough's administrative headquarters, located on the North Downs' lower slopes. It is located 10 miles (16 kilometres) southwest of Charing Cross, one of the London Plan's fourteen metropolitan centres. Sutton, a historic parish in the county of Surrey, is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having two churches and approximately 30 dwellings. Since 1755, its location on the London to Brighton road has resulted in the establishment of coaching inns, which has fuelled the village's growth. When it was connected to central London by rail in 1847, it began to grow into a town, and it expanded even more in the twentieth century. It merged with Cheam to become a municipal borough in 1934 and joined Greater London in 1965.
