There are only four electrical problems: faulty gas pedals, an alternator that lasts a maximum of 150,000 kilometers, an air conditioning compressor that lasts just as long, and a cheap switch under the brake pedal. The AZ series engines were carried over from the old RAV4 after a thorough debugging process. The most notorious and insidious issue was eliminated – weak cylinder head mounting threads. The revision only affected units produced after seven years. Naturally aspirated engines can wear out after 300,000 kilometers, requiring only fresh oil and cleanliness. Deposits tend to clog the intake tract, throttle body, mass air flow sensor, idle air control valve, and especially the injectors. Full-life water pumps and a leaking rear crankshaft seal are common. The timing chain is very reliable, and the valve train uses conventional tappets. After the 2010 restyling, a two-liter "four" from the 3ZR series appeared; its design is significantly more complex. In the Dual VVT-I system, the weak link is the clutches. The sophisticated valve lift mechanism has a weak spot in the vacuum pump. In the Dual VVT-I system, the control unit can malfunction due to a faulty pressure sensor. The six-cylinder 3.5-liter engines in American cars are temperamental. They have short-lived ignition coils, and before 2008, the engine could easily run out of oil. The cause is a poorly designed oil line. The four-cylinder 2.2-liter turbodiesel is a collection of problems and shortcomings. Cracks can develop around the cylinder liners, which can eventually cause a blown head gasket. Plus, there are leaky water pumps, seals, and gaskets. The clutch of a RAV4 with a manual transmission lasts up to 200,000 kilometers. But selling a manual RAV4 quickly and at a high price is difficult: demand is low. It's better to look for a pre-facelift automatic, the ancient Aisin four-speed. Don't expect blistering performance and fuel economy, but it's also difficult to break down the iconic "241" – unless you change the oil every 100,000 km. The Aisin CVT is a very durable option. It typically lasts 200,000 to 250,000 km. The main thing is to avoid overheating, which is often caused by traffic light racing and off-roading. A common problem is a broken differential belt. After this, it's easier to look for a new CVT. Another problem is cracks in the differential housing, through which oil will quickly leak, ruining the entire unit. Front-wheel drive is a rare option. The simple all-wheel drive has proven to be incredibly reliable. The axle shaft and driveshaft seals leak after 100,000 km. In the pre-facelift model, the clutch bearing starts to whine at 50,000 km. Keep up to date with fluid changes! It's recommended to renew the grease in the rear differential and clutch every 30,000-40,000 km. The suspension is fine. Even the struts and stabilizer bushings on a Toyota last almost 100,000 km. The front shock absorbers last 1.5 times longer, and the rear shock absorbers twice as long. Wheel bearings in some regions are replaced at 120,000-150,000 km. The Toyota RAV4 XA30 is definitely a good option with a reliable engine, transmission, and suspension. Regular maintenance will live up to its "indestructible" title. However, it's quite susceptible to theft! The VIN is located under the front passenger seat.
