Is Life Better in England or South Africa? An Honest Review After 6 Years As a UK immigrant 🇬🇧🇿🇦

Hey, it’s Marco. After six years in the UK, here’s the real deal on moving from South Africa. Expectations: The UK as a Magical Fix South Africans often expect the UK to be flawless and better in every way. I thought so too, influenced by others who wanted to leave, thinking life elsewhere would solve everything. Reality: A Tough Transition Moving is hard. You leave family, friends, and comfort behind. It’s not a magic fix—if you don’t rewrite your life, you’re the same person in a new place. South Africa isn’t as bad as I thought, despite economic challenges. Infrastructure: Not Perfect UK roads are compact, with potholes in my Essex town. South Africa has bigger roads, sometimes in better shape. But the UK has more control—people follow rules, and roundabouts manage traffic. Shops are accessible, but houses are cramped; you share yards with neighbours. Public Transport: UK Wins UK public transport is great—safe, affordable buses and trains for short trips, though long ones are pricey. South Africa’s transport, even in Cape Town, isn’t as reliable. Safety: Feeling Secure in the UK South Africa’s crime is high—walking at night is dangerous, and many are crime victims. In the UK, I feel safer after six years, though cities like London feel less secure. South African homes need burglar bars; here, I’ve only had a smashed window once. Cost of Living: Manageable in the UK The UK’s cost of living is high but manageable. A normal wage gets you decent food and quality of life, unlike South Africa, where basics are expensive. I can afford supplements and subscriptions here—tougher back home. Culture Shock: Adjusting to New Norms The UK’s humor and speech were hard to adjust to—my South African accent confused people. Returning to South Africa, the lack of safety and people waiting for jobs shocked me. Groups there feel more intimidating than in the UK. Tips for Immigrants Don’t expect a problem-free life. It’s hard—many South Africans move back. Live with friends to cut costs. Adjust to weather, diverse cultures, and British banter. Have a plan: corporate job, business, or saving up? Stay aware—crime still happens. The best part? Cheap European travel if you have time and cash. If you’re curious about my journey, reach out on X or email; no need to follow, just drop a comment.
