The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) project began in 1996. The initial idea was for it to be launched in 2007, but it wasn't until Christmas 2021 that this super instrument left Earth – at a total cost of 10 billion dollars, 20 times more than expected! NASA website: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/ And what makes it so incredible? The most important part of a telescope is its mirror. The larger the mirror, the more light you can capture and, consequently, see more distant things. To give you an idea, the Hubble Space Telescope has a diameter of 2.4m, while the James Webb has a total diameter of 6.5m! The coolest thing was the clever idea they had to achieve this huge mirror. Instead of a single, solid mirror like Hubble's, they made a mosaic of mirrors that is folded in the rocket and unfolds in space. In total, there are 18 hexagons made of gold-plated beryllium, with a diameter of 1.32m. That's 25m² of total area, six times more than Hubble!
