Preventing Water Damage and Caring for Water Damaged Paper-based Records

This video demonstration, filmed in the Conservation Lab at the Provincial Archives of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, shares with viewers some preventative storage tips to protect their paper-based records such as photographs and documents from water damage that can occur due to flooding, rainstorms or leaking infrastructure. It is suggested to avoid storing items in attics, garages, basements, and if you must use those storage areas, to use plastic containers made from polyethylene and to always store your containers at least 4 to 6 inches off the ground. Viewers are also reminded to check on your storage areas and bins frequently to ensure that your storage area and methods are sound and are not showing signs of water damage, mold or pest infestation. In addition to some preventative storage suggestions, this DIY demonstration walks viewers through some tips on how to salvage wet documents and photographs at home using simple methods and easy to find home and store-bought materials in an effort save your precious memories.
