Location: Inside intake tube that connects the air cleaner assembly to throttle body, near the air cleaner assembly. b. Description: Measures the volume and density of air entering the engine. The engine control module uses this information in conjunction with input from other sensors, to calculate the correct amount of fuel to deliver to the engine. The type of mass air flow sensor used on the 8.1L is a “hot wire” sensor. This means that the sensor passes an electrical current across a platinum wire which in turn heats it to a predetermined temperature. As air passes over the wire it cools it, increasing the amount of current needed to keep the wire at the specified temperature. The amount that the wire is cooled is directly proportional to the temperature, density and humidity of the air passing through the sensor and as such, the current increase needed to heat the wire allows the computer to easily calculate the volume of air entering the engine. You can purchase mass air flow sensor cleaner to remove carbon from the hot wire and we recommend you do this as a preventative maintenance every 5,000 miles or annually. c.
