The Undisputed Best Fly for Catching Trout | It’s Not What You Think | The Entomology Files – Ep. 1

The Entomology Files – Episode 1: What is the best fly for catching trout? You’ve probably heard the saying: “The best fly for catching trout is the one they’re biting on.” And while that answer is absolutely true… it doesn’t really help you unless you understand why trout are feeding the way they do. In this first episode of The Entomology Files, we take a step back from specific fly patterns and look at the bigger picture—how trout feeding behavior actually works. By understanding how natural systems tend to follow patterns—and how those patterns apply to fish behavior—you can move beyond guesswork and start making more consistent decisions on the water. This episode introduces a simple but powerful idea: Most things in nature cluster around an average… and trout behavior is no different. Once you understand that, a lot of things start to make sense: • why one fly works one day but not the next • why some fish take your fly while others ignore it • and why, every once in a while… a trout eats your strike indicator This is the foundation. In future episodes, we’ll build on this and start breaking down what actually drives trout to feed the way they do—and how you can use that knowledge to choose the right fly more consistently. Note: I struggled with a new microphone setup and recording levels in this one - hoping to do better in the next one.
