Recogida selectiva de residuos y producción de compost en los pueblos de la Sierra de Cádiz
The separate collection of organic waste is being implemented in the 19 municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz Association of Municipalities. This will be used to produce high-quality compost for agricultural use and will reduce methane emissions from landfills. For quality composting, it is important that the organic waste be pure, that is, free of contaminants from other waste streams. BASICA is the public company that manages the waste. Biodegradable bags are being distributed to residents to help them separate their waste. The circular economy project being carried out by the municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz will result in a significant net reduction in environmental impact and net resource savings. The pilot program began a year ago in Zahara de la Sierra. Residents no longer need to take their waste to the container; it is now collected door-to-door. The containers were an obstacle on narrow or steep streets. Only emergency containers remain at the town's exits. Translucent bags have been distributed to verify proper separation. We see it in another town, Torre Alháquime. Two days a week it's packaging time, like today; one day paper and cardboard, and another day the general waste. Diapers and hygiene products are collected daily, and organic waste up to four days a week in the summer due to the heat. It's time to learn the schedule. The yellow Ecoembes bag is the most complicated to separate. Plastics, cans, and containers are only accepted in certain cases. But differentiating is essential to increase their reuse through efficient recycling. With the experience gained, in the first quarter of 2021, Olvera, Setenil de las Bodegas, Grazalema, El Bosque, Algar, and Villaluenga del Rosario are scheduled to join, and then it will reach the other municipalities of the Mancomunidad (Association of Municipalities), totaling about 120,000 inhabitants. The change in the waste management model embraces a long-standing environmental demand: not to relocate treatment facilities. To this end, a large, joint composting plant is planned for the municipality of Villamartín. With an investment of 11 million euros, the project is currently out to tender and its first phase is expected to be completed in 2022. Efficient recycling and the reuse of raw materials are fundamental aspects of the circular economy. Biological waste accounts for, on average, 40% of all waste. Separate collection of organic waste will be mandatory throughout the European Union before the end of 2023. Achieving this in large cities presents a significant challenge. The towns of the Sierra de Cádiz have already begun. Participants: Sara María Naranjo (resident of Zahara de la Sierra), Isabel María Nieto (baker), Diego Pérez Rosa (Shift Supervisor, BASICA Public Company), Santiago Galván (Mayor of Zahara de la Sierra), Carlos Javier García (President of the Sierra de Cádiz Association of Municipalities), María López Sanchis (Director General for Environmental Quality and Climate Change).
