Throwing with Sodium Silicate
One of my goals this year was to work more on my work's surface appearance. Now that i have become a more adept thrower and can make a lot of different forms, I thought I'd dig into what tools I had learned in my sculpture classes in college. We used to use a chemical called Sodium Silicate to seal our plaster pieces and I learned through the interwebs that it is also a great tool for creating surface tension when throwing - resulting in some amazing texture opportunities for the surface of my pieces. I tried the technique out a little while ago and thought it would be a great video to share with you all.
