Gretsch RS201 Abbey Road Review | Mooloolaba Music
G'day guys, Marcus here at Mooloolaba Music! I’m joined by our good friend Mike from Gretsch Australia to introduce a truly historic and stunning collaboration: the Limited Edition Gretsch Abbey Road Studiomatic! This guitar is a partnership between Gretsch and the legendary Abbey Road Studios, built from the ground up to be a "player's guitar" that excels in the studio. Everything about it—from the construction to the electronics—was designed in conjunction with Abbey Road engineers. The Secret Weapon: The Rumble Filter The Studiomatic's core innovation is its custom-designed two-position Rumble Filter circuit. Abbey Road Heritage: This circuit is inspired by the classic RS 97 Rumble Filter, a piece of Abbey Road gear developed in the 1950s to remove excessive low-end buildup, ensuring cleaner, louder, and more mix-ready recordings. Unique Control: Activated by push/pull pots on the individual Tone controls, this filter offers two different degrees of low-end roll-off. You can engage it on each pickup individually, giving you a huge variety of tones that cut through a mix without sacrificing clarity or that classic Gretsch chime. An Icon in the Vaults This guitar is so significant that Abbey Road Studios has assigned it an official Recording Studio (RS) number: RS201. First Instrument Ever: This marks the first time in history that Abbey Road's prestigious RS numbering—traditionally reserved for groundbreaking technical equipment like the famous RS124 limiter—has been awarded to a musical instrument. Custom Sound & Collectible Details Custom Pickups: The pickups were custom-voiced with Abbey Road engineers and pickup design icon Tim Shaw. They are a custom Filter'Tron variant that offers a throatier, slightly more mid-forward sound than a traditional Gretsch, yet still retains the clarity and openness the brand is famous for. Player's Features: Built to be played, it includes locking tuners, a pin bridge, and strap locks. Case Candy & Easter Eggs: The guitar comes in a custom limited-edition case (with colours inspired by Studio 2) and includes an envelope with exclusive collectible items, including the schematic and graph of the filter circuit! Extremely Limited! Mike confirmed that only 24 of these stunning, collectible, and player-focused guitars will be coming to all of Australia. They are available starting today!
