Care of the Newborn

This meeting was a healthcare educational session focused on newborn care, led by Dr. Adesola Adelaja, a consultant pediatrician. Dr. Adelaja presented comprehensive guidance on essential newborn care practices including warmth maintenance, skin care, umbilical cord care using chlorhexidine gel, eye examination procedures, and the importance of immediate breastfeeding within 30 minutes to 1 hour of birth. The presentation covered proper breastfeeding techniques, feeding on demand, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, and warning signs requiring immediate medical attention. Dr. Adelaja also addressed harmful cultural practices to avoid, including unnecessary cord cutting methods, herbal preparations, and traditional bathing techniques that could potentially harm newborns. The session concluded with a Q&A portion where participants asked about flat head concerns, umbilical cord care, abdominal pain in pregnancy, and breastfeeding preparation techniques.
