Second generation. DaimlerChrysler announced the new M-Class (W164, 2005–2011) back in December 2004. The W164 debuted at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005. Compared to the first generation, the car was completely redesigned: it was 71 mm wider, 5 mm lower, and 150 mm longer than its predecessor, while the wheelbase increased by 95 mm to 2915 mm. Thanks to meticulous bodywork, the drag coefficient was reduced from 0.40 in the first generation to 0.34. Construction quality was improved by the use of a fully galvanized body with additional corrosion protection using an organic coating in certain areas and large plastic panels installed on the underbody. The model lineup consisted of the gasoline ML350 (3.5L V6, 272 hp) and ML500 (5.0L V8, 306 hp), as well as the turbodiesel 3.0L V6 with a new-generation CR system (their debut was with the new M-Class), ML280 CDI (190 hp), and ML320 CDI (224 hp). In 2006, the company unveiled the high-performance ML63 AMG at the North American International Auto Show. The model was equipped with a 6.3-liter M156 engine producing 510 hp (380 kW) and 630 Nm of torque. Production was established in Affalterbach, Germany.
