Figa - czy można uprawiać figę w Polsce? Jak to zrobić? Łatwa w uprawie!

Is it worth growing figs in Poland? And how? That's the topic of today's video from the "Balconies and Terraces" series. Enjoy! 🙂 Today's video from the "Balconies and Terraces" series will have a summer theme, as it will focus on the fig. What is this plant and how to grow it in Polish climates? More on that in a moment. Enjoy! The fig, or common fig, is a species of tree or shrub related to other figs, the ficuses, which we often grow in our homes. This plant originates from the Mediterranean region, but is now cultivated in many countries with warm climates. We most often associate figs with their fruit, which is soft, sweet, and rich in vitamins and minerals. Sometimes we also associate them with "figs with poppy seeds." But getting back to the plant... The common fig is not only a valuable fruiting plant but also a beautiful landscape element. Their shape and leaves can add charm to a garden or balcony, even in Poland, creating a unique, somewhat exotic, and often Mediterranean atmosphere. Some associate this plant, along with palms, oleanders, and olives, with trips to warm countries, especially Croatia. Figs are characterized by large, leathery, heart-shaped or palmate leaves with three or five lobes. They can grow up to 12 cm in diameter and are very decorative. The stems are relatively thick, and the bark is smooth and light gray. The pear-shaped fruits are also decorative, starting small and green, then expanding and darkening over time. They appear even on small plants, even those grown in Poland. In Poland, figs are most often grown in pots. It's not difficult. You can purchase fig seedlings at some garden centers, online, or from friends who already have the plant. Figs are very easy to propagate from tip cuttings of young growth. Simply cut them off and root them in water or directly in a pot of soil. They are a heat-loving plant, so growing them in our climate is a bit more challenging than growing apple or pear trees, but with the right precautions and care, it's entirely possible. I've seen Polish gardens where figs were grown even in the ground. However, for now, I'll stick with growing them in pots. My fig has been with me since last fall and overwintered in my house, first in an unheated greenhouse and then in a cool garage. In our climate, these plants usually lose their leaves in winter; don't worry; in warmer countries, they often remain evergreen. If you notice that the root ball is outgrowing the pot, it's worth transplanting the fig to a larger container. It should be large enough or deep enough to allow for further root growth. The pot should also have drainage holes to prevent the plant from overwatering. A fig is much more forgiving of temporary dryness than of excess moisture in the soil. The soil should be fertile and well-drained. You can use ready-made soil for Mediterranean plants, or even universal or balcony soil. The repotted plant should be placed at the same depth it was growing at before. Location is also important. Figs thrive in full sun, so it's worth finding the warmest and sunniest spot in the garden or on a balcony, preferably sheltered from strong winds, for example, against a south-facing wall of a building, where the plant will receive at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily. Since the soil in containers dries out more quickly, ensure regular watering, avoiding watering the roots, especially in cooler weather. Remember to fertilize your potted fig during the growing season from spring to autumn, as the plants deplete nutrients more quickly when grown in containers. Pruning figs isn't necessary, but if necessary, you can safely prune them, remove diseased or dead shoots, or shape them in any way you like, encouraging growth and fruiting. This plant tolerates pruning well. The biggest challenge in growing common figs in Poland is often overwintering. The plant should be well protected during cold weather if you want to leave it in the garden or, like me, move it to a location where the temperature doesn't drop below freezing, just like citrus trees, oleanders, bougainvillea, and other Mediterranean plants. Monitor the plant for diseases and pests throughout the growing season. And that's all for today.
