Modeled on the Templars, the order quickly evolved into a project of domination in Livonia, encompassing castles, territory, and a claim to power—even before the Teutonic Knights became a dominant force in the east. However, political conflicts, competition for Estonia, and ultimately the catastrophe of 1236 caused the entire order to collapse in a very short time.
