The Porsche 911 Dakar is a limited-run variant of the 992.1-generation 911, with just 2,500 units produced worldwide, so it is a very rare sight on the streets of Hong Kong. The car that Lung Sir and Edmond Lau are driving here is even equipped with the factory “Roughroads” / Paris‑Dakar style livery, making it look even closer to the 959 rally car that once won the Paris–Dakar Rally, and it is very likely the only 911 Dakar in Hong Kong with this exact appearance. Porsche essentially takes the 911 Carrera 4 GTS and upgrades it into the 911 Dakar, but for a so‑called high‑performance sports car, almost every modification goes against traditional sports‑car fundamentals. The ride height can be raised up to 191 mm, the tyres are Pirelli Scorpion all‑terrain items (rumour has it each tyre costs around HKD 10,000), the tyre sizes are smaller, and the car is heavier. Even though the engine produces 480 hp, it still has less power on paper than the 911 GTS. However, when Lung Sir and Edmond took the 911 Dakar up to Tai Mo Shan in Hong Kong, they couldn’t stop smiling behind the wheel. They said they had never driven a high‑performance sports car or a supercar that feels so at home on Tai Mo Shan’s Tsuen Kam Road. The Porsche 911 Dakar may look, on paper, like it breaks all the “rules” of sports‑car physics, yet once you bring it onto a mountain road with constantly changing surfaces, it somehow becomes incredibly likeable, and the connection between car and driver feels unusually tight.
