There is a good possibility there are 18 people in the photo. Krakauer notes this in one of this videos. Also, Pittman is on the top part of the Hillary Step, not the absolute top. The Hillary Step is the 40 foot rock step that Pittman is standing on the upper portion of. Takes a look at a photo taken by Scott Fischer to determine what happened on the upper part of Mount Everest on May 10, 1996.
